This selection of nautical tunes, navy marches, and songs of the sea expresses the spirit of our naval heritage on Canada’s West Coast. Petty Officer Roy Kaighin’s concert opener Sons of the Waves is based on Heart of Oak and the naval hymn Eternal Father. Portsmouth highlights all sections of the band and climaxes with a brilliant display of military drumming. The famous “Drunken Sailor” theme is the basis for Fantasy on a Sea Chantey, featuring solo piccolos and xylophone.

Marches are a part of daily life for a naval musician and the marches on this CD evoke the pride and esprit de corps of the Naden Band on parade. We are pleased to present three works by the “British March King” Kenneth J. Alford: On the Quarterdeck, The Middy and H.M. Jollies, as well as the classic march Invercargill.

Tall Ships was written by Doreen Saville-Burles to convey the majesty of the great sailing ships. It features vocalist Stephanie Greaves, who also performs the haunting ballad Into the West, from the Return of the King soundtrack. Tenor, Ken Lavigne presents a new setting of Northwest Passage, Stan Rogers’ tribute to the exploration of our magnificent north. Under the Sea, from the Disney film The Little Mermaid, features Petty Officer First Class Mike Broadley on the calypso vocals.

Through the years, the Naden Band has been known for its great soloists and musical versatility. Our dance band, Pacific Sound, is featured on Polka Dots and Moonbeams, with a beautiful trombone solo by Petty Officer Second Class Jeff Agopsowicz. The full band swings through an updated version of the 1924 Gus Kahn hit It Had to Be You.

Heart of Oak is the official march past of the Canadian Navy and typifies the camaraderie and teamwork of our Canadian sailors.

The Esquimalt Military Family Resource Centre (MFRC) financed this CD project. All proceeds from the sale of the CD will benefit military families - “the strength behind the uniform”. The Naden Band is proud to support the MFRC through this CD project.
